There is little doubt that celebrating the festive season whilst you are going through, considering or about to go through a divorce or separation is one of the more stressful things you will encounter in life. Christmas can be stressful enough for many families, but throw in alcohol, awkwardness, arguments and the expectation of family members for a Christmas as normal, can make matters unbearable.
As I have written in my previous blog, spending Christmas with my ex-wife after we separated to keep things as normal as possible for our daughter was a huge mistake and one I now regret. If you are struggling to cope with your family situation this Christmas, please remember, things will and do improve. You will have many more fantastic Christmases in the future, your children will be ok and take solace in the many hundreds of cases I have dealt with, where people have come out the other side happier, healthier and a lot less stressed.
In the mean time, I have listed my top ten songs about divorce or separation to help get you through and listen to in between all those cheesy Christmas Songs. Happy Christmas.
10. Alone Again, Naturally - Gilbert O’Sullivan
This was my first break up song when I was 15. We were not actually going out, but I was still devastated, but Gilbert helped me get through!
9. D.I.V.O.R.C.E - Tammy Wynette
You cannot really have a divorce list without this song featuring. I find Tammy’s version the best!
8. I will survive – Gloria Gaynor
The ultimate song to help any woman at the end of a relationship. Even as a man I can appreciate the words!
7. I will always love you – Whitney Houston
This was number one when I split up with my first serious girlfriend and no one sings it better than Whitney.
6. Someone like you – Adele
An amazing song from the best current singer songwriter. To be fair almost any song by Adele will help!
5. Goodbye my lover – James Blunt
This was in the charts when I got divorced. He may be more cheesy than a fondue party on the moon, but it is a great break up song.
4. It must have been love – Roxette
Don’t tell my rugby friends, but I must have seen Pretty Woman about 20 times. This is a great song to go with Roxette’s great 90’s power haircut.
3. The winner takes it all – Abba
Voted Britain’s favourite Abba song and although Bjorn always denied it was about his own divorce, the words are poignant for anyone going through a divorce.
2. Against all odds – Phil Collins
Phil Collins performed some pretty memorable songs about separation during his own divorce, but this soundtrack to the film of the same name is without a doubt the best. Give the film a miss though!
1. Nothing compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor
Written by the late Prince, and with an amazing video where Sinead starts crying as she remembers the flowers from her mother’s funeral. It is my favourite break up song.
So, there is my top 10 break up songs. They are of course a purely personal choice and based on my own (rather sad) music tastes and experiences.
